Crews Search For Missing Man In Silver Lake
August 26th, 2008    Subscribe To Our FeedWZZM, Mich, reports the story …
Authorities tell WZZM 13 News the victim’s name is Kit Kurt Knibbe of Warren, who was vacationing with his family on the lakeshore.
They say Knibbe and his three children were tubing on the lake Wednesday afternoon when 10-year-old and 3-year-old fell off their tubes. Investigators say Knibbe jumped into the lake without a life jacket, began to struggle and went under.
Oceana County Sheriff’s deputies say the victim’s 18-year-old stepson jumped into the lake to try and help but could not. He did, however, gather the children, who were wearing life jackets. A passerby on pontoon boat helped them out of the water and took them back to shore.
Dive crews searched the lake all day Thursday using sonar devices. They say it is especially difficult considering the bottom of Silver Lake is full of dark silt and tall weeds.
We talked to Knibbe’s family today and they provided us with his photo. They did not want to talk with us on camera.

Is The Cost Of Fuel Affecting Boaters?
July 6th, 2008    Subscribe To Our FeedThis pontoon boater is not letting the high cost of fuel prevent him and his family from enjoying a day on the lake…
Jeffery King lugs two big red cans of gasoline onto the pier at Innisfil Beach Park.
He puts the containers down for a moment, stopping to rest his aching muscles.
“Seems like it gets heavier the more expensive it gets,” the Alcona resident said, laughing.
But the hefty price of gasoline — $1.36 at the pumps and about 15 cents more per litre at marinas — isn’t about to stop him from enjoying a glorious, sunny day on Lake Simcoe with this family.
King just bought a pontoon boat with an outboard engine. Gas prices didn’t deter his $13,000 purchase.
“It does suck back the gas,” she says. “But it’s not something I’m about to give up.”
King said there are other ways to save money on fuel, such has switching to a smaller vehicle or making fewer trips by car. But give up boating — never.
“It’s just not something you are going to give up doing,” he says, his three children swimming near by.
To save some money on fuel, King buys his gasoline at Canadian Tire, where he has a discount gas card. But that means hauling those heavy red cans out to the boat, something King is willing to do.
Other boaters and personal watercraft users seemed undeterred by record-high gas prices as well. The bay around Innisfil Beach Park was busy with powerboats Saturday.
“It’s a fantastic day out here,” King said, as brilliant sunshine bounced off the calm waters of Lake Simcoe. “It’s all about the weather.”
Thanks to Innisfil Journal for this boating story.

Boat Rescue in Beaufort
July 6th, 2008    Subscribe To Our FeedOn Saturday the Beaufort Water Search and Rescue team was called to three boating incidents.
From the Beaufort Gazette… About 1 a.m. Saturday, the crew was called to a boat with a dead battery in Port Royal Sound. They helped jump start the engine and sent the vessel on her way.
Almost at the same time, another crew brought to shore eight people from a pontoon boat in Archers Creek to Broad River landing.
Saturday afternoon, six people visiting from Washington, Ga., were stranded on a sand bar when the tide went out, leaving them and their boat almost a quarter-mile from water.
“We were going to wait for the tide to float them, but a storm was coming in,” said skipper Dick Jennings. When a rescue boat neared to check on them, all six people headed for the floating boat. All were taken to Dataw Island Marina.
However, since the visitors didn’t know anyone in the area, Jennings drove them to their truck that was parked at Gay’s Seafood near Harbor Island.
Their boat? Still at anchor. Jennings said the group planned to retrieve it today.

Pontoon Boat Water Taxi
June 25th, 2008    Subscribe To Our FeedAt 5:25 last night, the pontoon boat water taxi Miss Pittsburgh, one-third full with 16 passengers, departed from the 23rd Street docks in the Strip District bound for PNC Park.
At 9 years old, the pontoon boat is no novice to the water, but her voyage yesterday was the first of many ferry trips Pittsburgh Cruise Lines has planned for remaining Pirates home games this season.
Many have tried and failed to establish regular water taxi service on Pittsburgh’s rivers. Mark Schiller, vice president of operations for Pittsburgh Cruise Lines, is betting that steep parking prices near PNC Park and the opportunity to sip a drink on the river will attract customers.
Mr. Schiller’s company has maintained a steady presence on the water for nine years, using the 49-passenger Miss Pittsburgh to shuttle fans to Steelers and University of Pittsburgh football games.
The new route starts ferrying passengers from Lockwall Marina at 23rd Street in the Strip District two hours before game time. It travels downriver to the wooden docks near Lincoln at North Shore — steps from PNC Park. The service caters to residents in the Cork Factory Lofts in the Strip District, who can easily walk to the marina.
A round-trip ticket costs $6, one-way $4. Soft drinks are served on board for $1, and alcoholic beverages are $2. And, if you get there before the crowds, parking nearby is free.
“You really can’t beat this,” said Pat Fabian, 32, while sipping a beer on board. “For $6 you can ride the boat and park for free … it’s ideal.”
